Krapp's Last Tape
John Hurt in 'Krapp's Last Tape.'A presentation through the Brooklyn Academy of Music Next Wave Festival from the Gate Theater Dublin manufacture of a play in a single act by Samuel Beckett. Directed by Michael Colgan.Krapp - John HurtJohn Hurt's resided-in and existentially walked-on face is really familiar from films (presently "Mess Tailor Soldier Spy"), it is a shock to understand this excellent British actor hasn't made an appearance with an American stage. He's, however, been inhabiting "Krapp's Last Tape," Samuel Beckett's searing meditation around the regrets of senior years, since 1999, inside a production that came from in the Gate theater underneath the direction of Michael Colgan and through the years has already established a few go-models around the West Finish. At this time, Hurt not just is the owner of the role, he seems to become living it. Before thesp opens his mouth, his riveting stage presence keeps the home completely hushed for many lengthy minutes of silence while his character gathers his ideas -- giving BAM auds sufficient time to contemplate exactly what a perfect setting the artfully corroded Harvey Theater creates this bleak theater piece. Whatever Krapp thinks about the problem because he sways over his huge empty desk, every worry line on his rough face emphasized underneath the glare of James McConnell's unforgiving lighting, it's apparent the non-public relaxation techniques of the thought-out and spoken-out author aren't happy ones. It is not until this old wreck shuffles offstage to sneak a glass or two and also to have an ancient tape recorder and stacks of audio tapes that the reason for his discontent becomes obvious. It's Krapp's 69th birthday, an event he ritualistically observes by looking into making a tape recording of his ideas concerning the year just passed by hearing his recorded ideas on years passed by. But this season he stalls around the tape he earned when he would be a cocky fellow of 39, filled with ambition and triumphant in the sexual conquests. Over and over, Krapp returns towards the vibrant voice of his dissolute youth, savagely contemptuous of their own hubris, but progressively succumbing towards the memory of his youthful aspirations and promise -- and also to the despairing realization of the items he's lost. Hurt uses the lyrical instrument of their own voice to follow along with that old man's emotional trajectory. He seems like a gravel pit when Krapp rumbles his scorn for that "stupid bastard" which was his more youthful self. But his voice assumes a musical lilt when he accumulates the cadences of their own language. (How he loves the seem from the word "spool," or, because he comes it around in the mouth like a bit of chocolate, "spooool.") But when the time comes for Krapp to make use of his last remaining tape to record his ideas around the existence lucrative leads, he surrenders in despair, hurling his books aside and strongly knocking all of the tapes towards the floor. "Absolutely nothing to say -- not really a squeak," he confesses, with what may be probably the most devastating line within the whole play. Inside a performance that's an excursion p pressure from starting to finish, a couple of things stick out relating to this "Krapp." Hurt causes us to be understand that Krapp is, indeed, a classic guy with physical infirmities as enfeebling as his mental degeneration. Shoulders stooped, chest caved in, he forces us to have the effort it requires with this aged recluse to haul themself up from his chair and shuffle to search for any blueberry in the desk drawer, and also the sheer agony it's for him to tug his bones offstage to steal a glass or two and cough his guts out. Another factor that impresses relating to this performance is what's missing from this -- the trend. Krapp continues to be an angry guy, but it is a melancholy anger, tinged with self-recrimination and regret for any existence not fully recognized, their own unspeakably sad and empty existence. Wim Wenders Explores New Dimensions With 'Pina'
BERLIN - A picture of German choreographer Pina Bausch hangs, in memoriam, in the Spartan hallway of Wim Wenders' Berlin office.Bausch, or Pina to everyone who knew her, died in 2009, just as Wenders was about to begin shooting a movie about her and her work. What was planned as a documentary became something else: the world's first 3D art house film and Wenders' true testimonial to the woman many credit with revolutionizing the art of dance. The film, Germany's official entry for the 2012 foreign language Oscars and a frontrunner in the best documentary category as well, is the culmination of an obsession with Pina's work that Wenders says began the moment he saw Bausch's Tanztheater in 1984."I saw the first piece of Pina's and immediately saw five more I saw everything she did," he says. "I'd seen some classical dance, but I was always bored. Here was something completely different. Even calling it modern dance is inappropriate. She created the word tanztheater, dance theater. What she does is plays where the acting is done by dancers."Bausch's work is, on the surface, worlds away from the films of the German auteur. Although her pieces often contain snatches of dialogue itself scandalous for classical-dance purists there is no discernable narrative. Wenders had done documentaries, but the subject in "Buena Vista Social Club" and "The Soul of Man" was always music. In his huge body of work, there are no overt references to dance. But from the moment he saw it, Wenders knew Bausch's Tanztheater belonged on the big screen. The only problem was, the director of "Paris," "Texas" and "Wings of Desire" had no idea how to do it."It became a running joke," Wenders says. "She'd say, 'Wim, when are you doing that movie on me?' and I'd say, 'Pina, I don't know how.' "The problem was space. Imagine shooting a dance performance: Where do you put the camera? Do a close-up of a single dancer, and you miss what's going on behind, in front of and beside them. Pull back for a wide shot, and the scene flattens out; you can see everyone, but the emotion is gone. And Pina's dances are emotional to the core."The more I got to know her work, the less I thought I was able to shoot it in a way that was valid," Wenders says. Then, in 2006, he saw an early cut of the groundbreaking digital concert film "U2 3D" in Cannes."It was the first 3D film, the first to use this new technology," Wenders says. "I called Pina from the screening. I said, 'Now I know how.' "3D might have solved the problem of space, but when Wenders did his first tests, there was another problem: movement. In 2006, the best 3D cameras still had difficulty capturing rapid motion. There was a shuttering effect: A dancer running across the stage would suddenly seem to have three legs or four arms."Even in 'Avatar,' if you look at the original, real-life footage not the stuff done in computer you realize it is less elegant, clunky," he says. "Four years ago, the technology couldn't handle natural movement. So we had to wait."By summer 2009, the technology had advanced to the point where they could start. Then Pina died of cancer in her home town of Wuppertal. She was 68."I had dinner with her eight days before she was taken from us," he says, his voice catching. "She looked tired. We all thought she was exhausted, which with Pina was a constant state. She checked in to the hospital for what we thought was a routine examination. Five days later, she was dead."Wenders immediately canceled the film. How could he continue without a single second of footage with his protagonist? He had planned to follow Pina around the world and chronicle her unconventional working method. When developing a performance, she would ask her dancers questions about their characters, and they would answer with gestures and movement. From that, she would build the performance. It was to be a film about Pina, and Pina was gone. But her worldwide fan base and dance troupe had not given up. They spoke with Wenders, telling him to keep going. So he did. He and Bausch had selected five plays to perform at Tanztheater. He shot those, then stopped."I had to change the entire concept of the film; I had to find a substitute for Pina's presence," Wenders says. "Finally, I realized it had to be the people who knew her best. It had to be the dancers."Wenders took Pina's method of interrogating her dancers and adapted it to the documentary, but with a twist: He asked them about the choreographer, and they answered with movement. The result is a doc with no narrative and practically no dialogue, but with an emotional power that's hard to deny. Then, struggling to finish the film in early 2010, he added another wrinkle: Wenders took the dancers offstage and had them perform outside on the streets, in the factories and along the open-faced coal pits of Wuppertal, Pina's hometown. It was an inspired move. Taking the 3D cameras outside opens up "Pina." The dancers dip and bob on a traffic island as cars zip by. A woman pirouettes onto a hanging rail car. Another moves across the floor of an abandoned mine, struggling under the weight of her male partner."3D really thrives on space the 3D camera loves infinity, the horizon," Wenders says. "It's a shame the 3D most people have seen wasn't shot in the real world but in the studios because it's in the real world where 3D really comes into its own."The result is arguably the most innovative and powerful film Wenders has made in a decade. "Pina" has already got the nod at the German Film Awards and European Film Awards for best documentary and, judging by the critical response to the film, is probably Wenders' best-ever chance ever to win an Oscar - one of the only major film honors the German auteur has yet to claim. But for Wenders, the only critical opinion that really matters is the one of the woman whose absence fills the screen."I would have liked to show it to Pina," he muses, softly. "Of course, that wasn't possible. I only hope it's a proper homage to her by the people who knew and loved her best: her own dancers." The Hollywood Reporter

ICM, Part 3: Agency Board & Rizvi Blow Off Chris Silbermanns Demands (For The Time Being)
ICM Imploding, Part 2: Chris Silbermann Forces Decision By Biggest Investor And Calls ICM Board Meeting Friday Privately Depending On Mike Ovitzs Help And Advice UPDATE: ICM investor Suhail Rizvi and also the ICM Board today blewoff yesterday’s demands byICM Leader Chris Silbermann for adecision andboard meeting concerning the management buyout. The main reason citedis that Silbermann hasyet toput anything on paper. “I think there’s lots of concern whether his plan's deliverable or executable. There’s absolutely nothing to consider until it is available,” one insider informs me.”He’s learned to place it on paper.” Another of my sources particulars, “There was today a casual boardconversation so early and fractious and ill-informedthat we’re not calling it a board meeting since there’s insufficient information from Silbermann to refer to it as a board meeting.” Now the onus is on Silbermann. For now, nobody will knowwhether Rizvi Traverse Management need abuyout of their 40% stake in ICM. Or if the ICM Board will accept it too.All of this begs the question whySilbermann behaved so prematurely.”Chris visited NY Thursday while he felt he wasn't obtaining a serious enough consideration by Suhail. So Chris attempted to goose the problem,” among my sources describes. That, after Silbermann hasbeen threatening for several weeks he and the clique could leave the company if he doesn’t get what he wants. Meanwhile, Silbermann’smanagement buyout plan remains so ill-created he can’t even explain it at length yet to ICM’s agents. At one recentpoint, Silbermann confessed to many agents in the camping they may need to expect a substantial pay cut –even a halving of the salaries –if financial resources or perhaps an resource-based loan can’t be acquired. That required the agents unexpectedly, as you would expect. Also,Silbermann stated that ICM Chairman Shaun Berg was aboard with this particular management buyout when, actually, Berg is neither for or against it since his camping hasn’t received any particulars about this yet. For Silbermann requesting Michael Ovitz’s help and advice to boost money, it’s well-known in Hollywood that Silbermann and the family have experienced many personal and professional ties to Ovitz. Also, Wall Street investment bankers involved with studio slate financial deals are verifying they’ve been contacted by Ovitz on Silbermann’s account. “Ovitz continues to be running everywhere attempting to raise money for Chris to consider over the organization,” one sources informs me. But with no success, I’m told. “No one thinks Ovitz can raise $50 million not to mention the $200 million essential to cash out Rizvi. The vista of that's ‘good luck’,” one source informs me. That Ovitz is involved whatsoever has put ICM’s status in risk and brought to consternation in lots of Hollywood circles. As you major player whose phone continues to be ringing free about this summarized the response for me personally, “They believe that Mike Ovitz may be the greatest doofus in the world, and Chris Silbermann may be the second greatest doofus.” Another latest development is the fact that Bob Broder and Ted Chervin are no more steadily in Silbermann’s camping due to the ongoingdivisiveness and destabilization from the agency since i have first broke this story. (ICM Imploding! Chris Silbermann & Shaun Berg Fight For Control: Rizvi Sits On Sidelines How Lengthy Will Warring Last?) Clients as well as their managers and agents are calling daily to request questions and express fears whether ICM is imploding. Had Silbermann presented a properly thought-outplan and stored his disappointment private(rather than speaking about this freely with Hollywood inside a succession of bars, for instance), all of this might have remained nowadays. Rather, his handling of the situation has elevated questions regarding onetime heir apparent Silbermann’s maturity level to consider within the agency now.

Hip Pads, Prosthetic Chins, Dips in Sub-Zero Lakes: The Making of 'My Week With Marilyn'
The year 2008 was frought with turmoil for Michelle Williams. Heath Ledger, her estranged husband, died of an accidental overdose in January, leaving her a grief-stricken single mother. Although fresh from an Oscar for Brokeback Mountain, her career was in limbo -- her passion project, Blue Valentine, had yet to materialize, and she considered leaving acting altogether.our editor recommendsMy Week With Marilyn: Film ReviewMichelle Williams' 'My Week With Marilyn' Moves to Thanksgiving WeekendMichelle Williams: Fashion Through the YearsThe Actress RoundtableMichelle Williams to Rock British Designer Todd Lynn Hot Off the RunwayMichelle Williams Channels Marilyn Monroe on and off ScreenMichelle Williams Red Carpet Evolution: From 'Dawson's Creek' to the Oscars (Photos)Michelle Williams to Receive Hollywood Actress Award at 15th Annual Hollywood Film Awards (Exclusive)Marilyn Monroe Mania Fed By 'Picturing Marilyn' Exhibit Featuring Unseen PhotosMarilyn Monroe Confidante and Costumer Angela Alexander DiesTHR's Actress Roundtable: Six A-Listers Sound Off on Bad Reviews, Nudity and Playing Hitler PHOTOS: The Lost Marilyn Monroe Photos "I wasn't sure if acting was the right place for me," she says. "Or if I was any good or liked what I was doing anymore." It was also around that time that Williams first read Adrian Hodges' script for a Marilyn Monroe project, for which she'd been wooed by director Simon Curtis. She was drawn to the story, which offered a snapshot of a week of the actress' life during the 1950s, but worried that she wasn't ready for the commitment. "I finished the last page, put it next to my bed and had already committed in my own mind to making this movie," says Williams. "But then the terror set in." Curtis, a veteran British TV and stage director who had been working on his first feature-directing assignment for more than five years, flew to NY and met with Williams in her Brooklyn home. "He came bearing gifts: books, postcards and little temptations, little enticements, to playing Marilyn," she recalls. PHOTOS: The Making of 'My Week With Marilyn' Although she had a firm offer for the lead, Williams told Curtis she wanted to audition to make certain she was right for the part. She was unsure if she could do justice to such an iconic character -- especially one who'd meant so much to her while growing up in Montana; she'd had a poster of Monroe on her bedroom wall that she stared at each night. She also worried about the feasibility of transforming her look. "There were certain unbridgeable gaps," she says ."I couldn't re-arrange my face and body to look like hers." While she spent the next six months laboring over research, Curtis and his team stayed hopeful. "We kept going back to her," says producer David Parfitt. "She'd say no. Then we'd go away for a bit and decide she's got to do it. We'd have another go. Then her agent and manager got behind it. She was very hard to persuade." VIDEO: Michelle Williams Brings a 'Heat Wave' to 'My Week With Marilyn' During this time, Derek Cianfrance's 10-year oddysey to make Blue Valentine finally materialized, and Williams filmed her grueling role -- an Oscar nomination would result -- as an unhappy wife opposite Ryan Gosling. She says the shoot acted as a kind of therapy. "It brought me back to life and reminded me, brought me back to myself," she says. At about the same time, Harvey Weinstein, whose company had acquired Valentine, fell in love with Williams' talent. "Harvey said, 'I want to be more involved with this girl,' " says Parfitt. "So we said, 'Well, we have this other film.' And he said, 'I want it.' " The idea for a movie about what happened in 1956 when Monroe, America's biggest movie star, flew to London to make the movie The Prince and the Showgirl with Lawrence Olivier, the U.K.'s greatest actor, began around 2003 after Curtis read two books by the late Colin Clark: The Prince, the Showgirl and Me and My Week With Marilyn. During the next six years, Curtis joined forces with Parfitt to get development funds from the BBC and the U.K. Film Council, then waited 18 months while Parfitt negotiated the rights with Clark's estate and six months more for Hodges' script. PHOTOS: Behind the Scenes of THR's Actress Roundtable 2011 Finally, in early 2010, Williams committed, and after $10 million in funding from Weinstein, it was a go. "For me, the most crucial discovery -- the flash -- was that the widely accepted image of Marilyn Monroe was a character that Norma Jeane played," says Williams. "Unless you study her and understand her a bit better than the commonly accepted view, one could miss who she was underneath that. Marilyn was a part she played." Bringing Monroe's complicated duality to life was Williams' biggest goal. For Curtis, capturing the authenticity of time and place was crucial. This process began with shooting at London's Pinewood Studios on the very stages where Olivier had directed and starred with Monroe. Curtis added additional locations at Parkside House, where Olivier had stayed; at Clark's home; at the Eaton school, which Clark attended; and, thanks to an unprecedented deal, to shoot even in front of Windsor Castle for a few hours early one Saturday. But there was another element, adds Curtis. "It came from a line in the Clark diaries that was, 'This is a fairy tale, but nevertheless, it's true.' It's a true story that I wanted to be magical as well," he says. Making magic on a $10 million budget isn't easy -- nor, as Weinstein told Parfitt, is gathering "the best British and international cast." So Curtis, Parfitt and Weinstein tapped friends and industry connections to fill in the blanks. Curtis persuaded Judi Dench to play Dame Sybil Thorndike, whom she had known. Parfitt used a trip to L.A. on behalf of BAFTA to meet with Kenneth Branagh, his former business partner, and recruited him to play Olivier. Weinstein then brought in Emma Watson for the role of the young costume designer, Lucy. Williams, meanwhile, continued her intense research into Monroe. In May 2010, she flew to London for meetings with makeup artist Jenny Shircore. "We spent half a day just standing in front of a mirror," says Williams. "We weren't trying to reconfigure my face. We were trying to add, you know, the curve of the lip, an eyeliner. It began a long process." VIDEO: 'My Week With Marilyn': Michelle Williams Takes on Monroe It was key early on that Williams, much shorter and lighter, not look exactly like Monroe; rather, she wanted to channel her essence. Williams gained a little weight to approximate Monroe's signature curves, but it just made her face puffy, so instead Williams and Shircore used padding to fill out her hips and rear end. Like Williams, costumer Jill Taylor did intense research, finding photos from the making of the movie in an archive. "Michelle is a much smaller lady," says Taylor, "so I really had to work on getting the proportions right." They had to find clothes for three Marilyns: the glamorous, sexy actress; the character of Elsie that Monroe plays in the movie within the movie; and the real-life Monroe, who wore simple, tailored clothes, often in earth tones. Taylor's biggest challenge was that she could only afford to make one reproduction of a white gown Monroe had worn in the movie, which Williams had to wear for a quarter of the eight-week shoot. "I was nearly wetting myself every day for 12 days straight," recalls Taylor. "If something happened to it, there was no other dress." Producers have made several trips to Denmark to work with Lego execs on the concept. Jill Wilfert, VP of licensing and entertainment at Lego, is exec producing, with Lin Pictures' Seanne Winslow co-producing. Vital Sues For Having Fellini's 'La Dolce Vita' (Exclusive)
Getty Images Vital Pictures will court to prove it has the copyright to Frederico Fellini's classic film, La Dolce Vita. Since the film's release in 1960, possession round the film has changed hands several occasions, leading to a more sophisticated chain-of-title dispute that Vital wants to offer relaxation permanently.our editor recommendsDoes anybody own Fellini's 'La Dolce Vita'?Restored 'La Dolce Vita' Returning to Italy's Silver Screen On Thursday, Vital filed a complaint in California federal court against Worldwide Media Films, which states function as valid copyright who is the owner of the Fellini classic. A year ago,Los angeles Dolce Vitacelebrated its 50th anniversary, and both companies needed advantagewith theatrical re-releases andspecial edition Digital video disks and Blu-Sun sun rays. Vital received cease-and-desist letters, leading the studio yesterday to file for to have an intriguing situation thatfigures to stretch across oceans and time. Despite the fact that this suit is completely new, it's not the first time the copyright toLa Dolce Vitahas experienced question. In 2007, Worldwide Media Films suedLucas Entertainment, that have released a porn version entitled Michael Lucas'La Dolce Vita. Before that dispute arrived at the cruel problem of whether there's substantial similarity in orgy moments, the question came into being whether Worldwide Media really held the best chain of title. The film's possession remains polygamous over time, understandably, and therefore, many copyright experts and document researchers were trotted through the parties to look for the 50-year good status for that film's guards. Worldwide Media elevated a theory of transfer that goes something such as this:the first producers in the film designated the rights in 1962 to Cinemat, S.A., which moved rights in 1980 to Hor A.G., which moved rights one year afterwards to Oriental Films, which moved rights in 1998 to Cinestampa, which moved rights in 2001 to Worldwide Media. Yearly later, Worldwide Media filed a registration while using US Copyright Office around the restoration copy in the Fellini film. Lucas Entertainment disputed the authenticity of numerous people contracts and offered another narrative that goes something such as this: The first producers in the film designated distribution rights within the united states . States in 1961 to Astor Pictures, which moved rights in 1966 to Ardisco Financial Corp., which later offered rights to Republic Entertainment, which was the predecessor-in-interest to Melange Pictures, which filed a restoration copyright in 1996. For more than ten years, Vital has controlled Melange's film library. Basically, an authentic mind-scratcher, plus it's no surprise that in March 2010, when considering this case, NY federal judgeJohn Koeltl put his hands up in near resignation, saying thatInternational Media had not successful within the burden showing the best chain of title. Judge Koelt wouldn't say who possessed the film. Does anybody? "Really, it is possible for your Fellini film to remain in everyone domain," he written inside an opinion. No matter the ruling, Vital states that Worldwide Media is constantly claim round the film and contains sent cease-and-desist letters, not just in Vital but furthermore for the Vital's theatrical partners who had been licensed showing the film. Vital still thinks it's valid custody of the children from the children inside the film which is now seeking a commitment of its possession title. Represented by David Halberstadter at Katten Muchin Rosenman, Vital may also be seeking damages for Worldwide Media's alleged copyright breach. To complicate things much more, it's feasible for a coming U.S. Top Court ruling will make this complete dispute moot. On October 5, our prime court heard arguments in Golan v. Holder, which examines whether numerous last century pieces of art were wrongfully taken off the general public domain when the U.S. government introduced an worldwide treaty that harmonized many intellectual property laws and regulations and rules all over the world. By signing these treaties, foreign authors received the opportunity to revive copyright on many works. The complaintant is alleging that a number of these works taken off the general public domain were a breach in the freedom of expression rights in the American public. It's feasible for the very best Court could restore many copyrighted actively works to everyone domain, including, yes, Frederico Fellini's La Dolce Vita. Google helps Tech City expand
LONDON -- Google's announcement last week that it was planning on opening a multimillion dollar investment hub in East London's so-called Silicon Roundabout not only marked a good day for the city's aspirations to become a technology center but also made the government's ambitions for its Tech City scheme seem more of a reality. What started as an area that three years ago housed around 15 digital companies, now boasts more than 500, from digital advertising and marketing outfits to social media and e-commerce shingles to gaming and apps businesses. And with the London 2012 Olympics being set mostly in East London next year, some $14 billion of government coin is already being plowed into the region.Tech City is, according to Eric Van Der Kleij, the chief exec for the project, the fastest-growing tech cluster in Europe."The pace of growth in the digital and technological sector in the area has more than doubled since January," says Van Der Kleij. "Every week we see a major company from the broadcast sector and entertainment sector come and have a look because of the incredible infrastructure going into the Olympic Park." It looks like that's exactly what Google is doing: The company, whose main offices are in a more central part of London, is taking out a 10-year lease on a seven-story building in Tech City that will act as a shared space for the growing cluster in internet companies based in the area. While the Internet giant will have a presence in the building, Google says it plans to use it for events, training workshops and demonstrations for engineers and startups.Last November, Prime Minister David Cameron first announced his wish to make East London one of the world's great technology centers, backed by 400 million ($625.3 million) in government funding with corporate support from tech companies such as Facebook, Google, BT and Cisco. But the new region could be a tricky sell for London's vibrant post-production and vfx shingles, which are mostly located in London's Soho.Van Der Kleij says that though some Hollywood entertainment companies are expressing interest in Tech City, there's not been a rush to relocate. And while some Soho-based post houses are intrigued, others are either unaware or happy where they are."We have no interest in relocating to the Tech City area," says a rep for one prominent post house that didn't wish to be named.Another high-profile post house hadn't even heard of the initiative and said it was "highly unlikely" the company would move to the area. But perhaps this could change once Tech City is up and running post-Olympics, and provided that Van Der Kleij and his team entice the right start-ups and established companies into the area."We'll invite people back to have a look when it's thriving during the Olympics," to get the feel of the scope of the facilities and the amount of production they're able to support," Van Der Kleij says. "There is nothing like it in Europe." n Contact Diana Lodderhose at diana.lodderhose@variety.comWatch a Movie

By Terri MacLeodNEW YORK., N.Y. -- Dancing with the Stars could be re-named Celebrity Biggest Losers. Each season star contestants melt away the pounds, as they try and dance their way to the top prize. DWTS contestant Ricki Lake proudly states shes already lost 8 1/2 inches thanks to the shows daily four to five hour workouts. Im hoping to pull a Kristie Alley, Lake reveals to People magazine. Im a little self-conscious of my arms and my back fat but theyre trimming down really quickly, she adds. Fellow DWTS contestant Nancy Grace is also shedding the pounds. The legal analyst has dropped 10 lbs. Not bad, ladies! For most of us, the chance to be on DWTS is slim, but you can still boogie away the pounds. When you dance, the music, the moves, and atmosphere put you in a space where you forget that you are working out, reveals dance expert Ilyse Baker, who has worked with Rihanna and LeAnn Rimes. When you dance you dont have to spend time looking at the clock counting down the seconds you have left to exercise. Anybody can dance whether its at the clubs, a dance studio, or in the privacy of your own home. Plus, its a fat-burning workout that tightens and tones. There are several different dance styles to choose from that offer different ways to blast calories and tone several different areas, says Ilyse. For example, Ballet is a great way to get those long, lean lines of a dancer that we are all destined to have and will leave you with a killer toned body. African Dance is an incredible all over energizing cardio workout where you can burn up to 1000 calories in 60 minutes. Ilyse shares with Healthy Hollywood 3 moves that will sculpt your body. So, crank up the music and get moving! For Killer Abs:Place your legs hip width apart, soften your knees, tuck your pelvis forward, and engage your core. Pump your arms and thrust your pelvis forward to your favorite tunes. Try doing this exercise for 5 minutes to your favorite song and you will be smiling all the way to your 6-pack abs. This move works your entire midsection and the best part is that you do not have to do a single crunch on the floor. For Lean Legs:Ballet helps to lengthen muscles and is a good way to go if you want to avoid bulky leg muscles. I love my Funky Plies move. Start in Ballet first position with your heels kissed together and your toes pointed out to about a 45-degree angle. Once you grasp this position, keep your feet turned out then walk your legs out to second position, which leaves your feet right underneath your shoulders. Keeping your arms by your sides, your chest lifted, bend straight down and then straighten your legs as you squeeze your butt cheeks together. Pop in your favorite music and start this move by bending down in your legs, keeping them wide then as you come up bring one leg in then repeat to the other side. You will feel this in your quads, glutes, hamstrings, and a little in your adductors as well. For Fierce Arms:Try playing my follow the leader game. Push your arms out to the sides of the room nice and strong. Pull your hands into your chest then drop your elbows down to the floor, fingertips shoot up towards the ceiling, and push away back to your starting position. Keep this movement strong and in control for maximum results. Put on your favorite tunes and do this exercise repeatedly until you feel the burn. For more dance moves, check out www.ilysebaker.com. Also, tune in to Dancing with the Stars tonight at 8 PM on ABC. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. Judge Dismisses Copyright Suit Over Fox's 'Percy Jackson' Franchise
Doane Gregory/Fox 2000 Pictures A NY federal judge has ignored a copyright suit that stated twentieth century Fox, the Wally Disney Co. yet others active in the making from the Percy Jackson number of books and film lifted material from a number of youthful-adult books. The suit was filed in May 2010 byRobyn and Tony DiTocco, authors from the Hero Perseus: A Mad Myth Mystery (2002) and Atlas' Revenge: Another Mad Myth Mystery (2004), which told the storyline of the character named Percy John Allen ("PJ"), a contemporary-day teen who descended in the Greek mythological hero Perseus and it is summoned to battle ancient battles to be able to save the planet while balancing the requirements of the every-day teen. The claims collected some attention since the DiToccos were symbolized by Marc Toberoff, the attorney that has fought large Hollywood galleries coupled with come up with a complaint that listed 100s of commonalities between your five Percy Jackson books by author Ron Riordan and also the two books through the litigants. Nonetheless, copyright legal cases alleging substantial similarity are tough, and here's another demonstration of a complaintant that has unsuccessful to obtain beyond the initial threshold of showing misappropriated expression. Inside a decision on Tuesday, NY Judge Sidney Stein provides a lengthy analysis why no reasonable jury could conclude the two works are substantially similar. A couple of good examples: The PJ books are told in third person. The Percy Jackson books are told in first person by Percy themself. The PJ books cover the protagonist's existence close to the finish of senior high school and into college. The Percy Jackson material is placed once the primary character is age 12 to 16. The PJ books educate visitors about Greek mythology by straight exposition in the messenger Hermes whereas Percy Jackson is told these misconceptions through conversations with assorted figures at Camping Half-Bloodstream. To be certain, the judge appreciates some commonalities, beginning with the truth that both figures share exactly the same name. Consider that title derives in the hero Perseus of Greek mythology, a personality the judge notes is "unquestionably within the public domain," there's an easy explanation. Plus, other noted commonalities for example figures who've to handle missing parents and display potency and efficacy in battles with otherworldly forces are considered to become commonplace within the youthful male hero genre in works for example Harry Potter and Spider-Guy. In a nutshell, look left at two works and discover commonalities look right and discover dissimilarities and common ideas. Out of the box common practice nowadays, Judge Stein favors along side it that dismisses the claims on summary judgment. Is '50/50' a potential Academy awards Sleeper?
I've been raving about '50/50' -- the Jonathan Levine-directed dramedy which stars Ernest Gordon-Levitt just like a youthful guy stricken with cancer -- for the days. Last evening, I used to be asked for essentially thought it could garner an Academy Award nomination for top Picture. My primary, knee-jerk reaction? Not really a chance! But, wait: why can't the most popular movie of year (so far) be nominated with an Oscar? You will discover a few reasons, just one is the fact that there is not any real discussion of the chances if nobody is mentioning '50/50' inside the same sentence as "Oscar," it probably cannot be nominated, right? Let's change that: thank you for going to Moviefone's official '50/50' Oscar campaign kick-off! Now, I recognize that you just probably haven't seen '50/50,' because it won't emerge until inside a couple of days. (We'll publish an even more-detailed summary of the film then.) But that's kinda the reason. Nobody saw 'Warrior,' (a film I loved but nowhere near around I loved '50/50') since movie is toast. No real chance for just about any major honours outdoors from the potential supporting actor jerk for Nick Nolte. (In addition to Nolte's nomination, which was a shoo-inside a few days ago, is searching pretty bleak nowadays.) Consequently: Don't allowed this to happen to '50/50.' Do not let the awful recollections of co-star and producer Seth Rogen's other cancer movie, 'Funny People,' scare you away. I saw '50/50' over recently which i still can't get its charm, wit, fear, surrealism and raw f-cking emotion from my thoughts. (And, that it's worth, I rarely visit softball softball bat for movies like I'm doing now.) Yet, for just about any film that we like around I really do '50/50,' why am I so reluctant take any chance to have an Oscar nomination? Because films like '50/50' aren't usually nominated. 'Terms of Endearment' (a film stated in '50/50') won Best Picture in 1983 and, initially, covers similar ground. But, not always. 'Terms' was more an account of a failing marriage that ended with cancer -- certainly difficult riot! '50/50' is all about cancer, but it's also quite funny. It's certainly not really a pure, straightforward comedy -- but any hint of laughter in route is not examined while using kindest of eyes with the Academy. However, when the were the eighties and early 1990's, I'd feel fairly comfortable putting '50/50' in the center of the Oscar race. Ultimately, that was a period of time period which saw 'Tootsie,' 'Working Girl,' and 'Ghost' all leave with Best Picture nominations. 'Tootsie' is great, but sometimes you'd suppose movie acquiring a best picture nomination today? Which may be the problem, I've become hard-wired to recognize this type of circa-2011 Best Picture nominee should certainly appear like. (Also, similar to in 1982 if the was difficult to fathom a movie being nominated for top Picture that featured Bill Murray, it's hard to create a movie this season getting nominated which has Seth Rogen -- but, for f-ck's sake, it will.) An Oscar movie should certainly appear as an arty period piece or -- since the expansion up to ten films -- a "congratulationsInch action blockbuster that has little chance of winning, but enhances the ratings in the Academy awards telecast. (Think: 'Inception.') '50/50' doesn't appear like either of people, so -- in my opinion -- it is not an Oscar movie. But that's this kind of bullsh-t reason not to go near softball softball bat for '50/50.' That People am. The next. So, inside a couple of days, visit '50/50' do not let it suffer the identical fate as 'Warrior.' Then, join me back here therefore i don't appear like I'm standing by simply myself. Toronto 2011: The 10 Most Buzzed-About Films That Still Haven't Found a U.S. Distributor
"Take This Waltz" As the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival winds down, North American distribution deals are being struck left and right. More than 30 films have found homes during this year's fest, including several with at least a modicum of awards potential: Steve McQueen's Shame, Luc Besson's The Lady, Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights,Lynne Shelton's Your Sister's Sister, William Friedkin's Killer Joe, and Abel Ferrara's 4:44 Last Day on Earth. While everyone is counting the surprisingly high number of films that have found happy endings -- or at least happy beginnings -- at TIFF 2011, I thought that it might be just as useful to take a quick inventory of the fest's most buzzed-about films that haven't yet struck a deal. After all, the clock is ticking quickly, but time is not up yet. So, without further ado, here are the 10 that, to my eye, have the greatest potential in the marketplace. 360 -- The last time that Rachel Weisz was directed by Fernando Meirelles, in 2005, she wound up with an Oscar. That film was an adaptation of John Le Carre's novel The Constant Gardener; this one -- which also unfolds like a thriller -- was inspired by Arthur Schnitzler's century-old play Reigen, which explores the complexities of sexual relationships between people of different social classes, and adapted by Oscar winner Peter Morgan. Anthony Hopkins, Ben Foster, and Jude Law also star. PHOTOS: Toronto Film Festival: 13 Movies to Know Barrymore -- In this one-man show, legendary thespian Christopher Plummer reprises the role of legendary thespian John Barrymore that won him a best actor Tony 15 years ago. The 81-year-old's vigor and stamina is amazing, and, even if the film starts to drag after a little while, it seems to me that Focus Features, above all other studios, would be smart to take a flyer on it. After all, they will already be trotting out Plummer -- as much as one can -- to drum up support for his other great performance this year, in their film Beginners (for which he has a strong shot in the best supporting actor category), and they could conceivably get double the bang for their buck -- as in a double-nod for the Oscar-less veteran (and keep in mind: the vast majority of people who have had a lead and supporting nod in the same year have won one). The Eye of the Storm -- Australian writer/director Fred Schepisi, who is best known for the films Roxanne (1987) and A Cry in the Dark (1988), adapted (from a popular 1973 Aussie novel) and directed this actors' showcase about an elderly woman (Charlotte Rampling) nearing death whose children (Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush and Oscar nominee Judy Davis) make a rare trip home to see her, with the goal of boosting their respective standings in her will. PHOTOS: Toronto Film Festival's Top 10 Fashion Statements Friends with Kids -- The romantic-dramedy Kissing Jessica Stein (2001), which was co-written by and stars Jennifer Westfeldt, premiered at the TIFF on September 10, 2001. One day shy of 10 years later, Westfeldt brought premiered her directorial debut Friends with Kids -- another another romantic-dramedy in which she stars -- at the fest, and once again had audiences wrapped around her finger. This one -- which also stars Adam Scott, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Megan Fox, Ed Burns, Chris O'Dowd, and Westfeldt's partner Jon Hamm -- should play very well with young/middle-aged adults, and, if it gets picked up, I think it could be a major player in the best musical/comedy race at the Golden Globes. Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding -- Two-time Oscar winner Jane Fonda returns to the big screen after a four-year absence in this Bruce Beresford-directed dramedy, playing a child of the sixties who is now a grey-haired grandmother -- only, she hasn't gotten the memo that her behavior was supposed to change over the years. When her long-estranged daughter (Catherine Keener) shows up at her home -- with two kids in tow (the girl is played by Elizabeth Olsen of Martha Marcy May Marlene) -- after separating from her husband, Fonda teaches them all to loosen up and helps each of them find a bit of romance (Olsen with Chace Crawford). Think On Golden Pond (1981)... but funny, and with Fonda now the parent instead of the child. PHOTOS: Venice Film Festival Portraits Rampart -- Woody Harrelson gives a tour-de-force performance as a crooked but lovable LAPD cop who begins coming off his hinges as his personal and professional life begin to fall apart. The gritty film reunites the key talent behind The Messenger (2009): Harrelson and writer/director Oren Moverman -- both of whom scored Oscar nods for that project -- as well as actor Ben Foster, in a small role. It also features a crazy number of other talented actors, including Ned Beatty, Steve Buscemi, Ice Cube, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Sigourney Weaver, and Robin Wright. Take This Waltz -- The 32-year-old Canadian actress-turned-writer/director Sarah Polley, whose last film Away from Her (2006) wowed critics and earned Oscar nods for her script and leading lady, returns with another heartwrenching pic about the hazards of love. This one stars Michelle Williams, arguably the best actress of her generation, as a woman torn between two men, her husband (Seth Rogen) and her new neighbor (Luke Kirby). PHOTOS: The Scene at the Venice Film Festival Think of Me -- This intense, emotional film from director Bryan Wizeman captures the economic stress bearing down on many American families during these tough times in a way that few others have, or have even attempted to. Like Frozen River (2008), for which Melissa Leo wound up with a best actress Oscar nod, it is about a single mother (Lauren Ambrose) and the extent to which she is willing to go to provide for her child (9-year-old Audrey P. Scott). Ambrose's performance, in particular, is generating considerable buzz. Twixt -- Francis Ford Coppola's latest quirky "personal" film, which stars Val Kilmer and Elle Fanning, was apparently inspired by a dream that he once had. When the master filmmaker took clips of the pic to Comic-Con in June, audiences were both confused and intrigued by what they saw and heard -- and that apparently remains the case now that it has been seen in its entirety. It certainly doesn't have the mainstream appeal of Coppola's best-known works, but his name alone might be enough to attract respectable box-office numbers at art house theaters. Winnie -- This controversial, unauthorized profile of Winnie Mandela, the ex-wife of former South African president Nelson Mandela, features a fine performance by Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson as the former (her best since Dreamgirls [2006]), but is essentially stolen by Oscar nominee Terrence Howard (who made his name at TIFF seven years ago in Crash [2005]) as the latter. Howard absolutely nails the great leader's accent, posture, and countenance -- even more so than Morgan Freeman in Invictus (2009) -- and could be a serious best supporting actor Oscar contender if the film gets picked up. Invasion!
A Play Company presentation of the play in a single act by Jonas Hassen Khemiri, converted by Rachel Willson-Broyles. Directed by Erica Schmidt. With: Andrew Ramcharan Guilarte, Francis Benhamou, Bobby Moreno and Nick Choksi.Oh, God, finally -- a play about Arab identity that is not a naked grab for grant money. Jonas Hassen Khemiri's inventive tragicomedy "Invasion!," inside a perfect translation by Rachel Willson-Broyles, hits all of the right notes in order to its moving conclusion, controlling to infuriate, then amuse, then enthrall without ever seeming disjointed or unsure. Solid work in the four-person cast and smart direction from helmer Erica Schmidt seal the offer. It's tempting to simply stop the review the following, since "Invasion!" holds a lot of surprises, but it is more enjoyable to inform a little about this. The play happens throughout it begins served by a guy (Andrew Ramcharan Guilarte) along with a lady (Francis Benhamou) carrying out a actively stilted scene from Swedish historic epic "Signora Luna," where we catch just one, portentous title: Abulkasem. After that, we switch configurations to some senior high school, where we discover another Abulkasem -- a gay Beirut native who involves visit his brother in the usa (where he calls themself "Lance") and does not always obtain a warm welcome. The scholars (who've seen "Signora Luna" and do not enjoy it) make "abulkasem" a noun, a verb, an insult, a compliment -- "It grew to become an ideal word," states Arvind (Nick Choksi). "However sometimes there have been misconceptions." We go back to these children at the finish from the show, and Bobby Moreno, a standout here, provides a deeply moving monologue that ties the entire factor together -- insinuating, maybe, that to understand another culture, we should not ignore its future gamers. It is the title "Abulkasem" itself that sits at the middle of Khemiri's play -- its four syllables can describe extremely differing people, just as they possibly can stand it for the fears People in america have in regards to a broadly demonized group. In a number of interstitial sequences, "experts" on Abulkasem discuss his exploits without ever really saying who he's because they do not know or care. If there is a portion of this play that goes just a little underserved, it's "The Demon Director," where a grad student (Benhamou) will get hassled by her pretentious co-workers. The scene is extremely funny, and in addition it can serve as the only real major indictment of people that will probably begin to see the show. For your alone, it's valuable. Within the play's most scabrous scene, we meet a nameless Arab apple picker whose command of British does not quite work, and that he requests a translator (Benhamou) who informs us what he's saying or otherwise. What's clearly a monologue about how exactly much he loves Abba (Khemiri is Swedish) is converted increasingly more clearly because the rantings of the terrorist lunatic, until "Waterloo! I had been defeated/ you won the war " becomes "Before I strapped about the dynamite belt " It's greater than a metaphor -- something less extreme, but similar happened on the Palestinian kids' show in 2007 -- but it is an ideal microcosm from the problems of yankee paranoia and also the ease that that paranoia could be cheated. Somewhere in "Invasion!", and it is best not saying where, is a minumum of one howlingly funny coup p theatre which will either cause you to laugh hysterically or terminally piss you off (this is a great time to provide, er, props to create designer Antje Ellerman, too). Here's wishing it is the former -- its not all play can make you examine your personal responses, and it is a much better theater for individuals that.Arranged, Antje Ellermann costumes, Oana Botez-Prohibit lighting, Matthew Richards seem, Bart Fasbender fight choreography, J. Steven Whitened production stage manager, Ray K. Ash. Opened up Sept. 13, 2011 examined Sept. 12. Running time: one hour, 20 MIN. Contact Mike Thielman at mike.thielman@variety.com
